Going to Melbourne in late August for 4 days. What to do?

Travel Info
I studied in Melbourne in the 90s. Now i would like to revisit your lovely city. Thus i will not be visiting the touristy places.

I would like to go to parks. I have in mind the following:
1. Queen Victoria Market
2. Docklands
3. Dandenong ranges
4. National parks
5. Puffing Billy (1/2 days tour)

How is the weather then? will it be very cold? btw, i am from malaysia, a tropical country.

is it advisable to go to the parks on my own (ie is it safe) or is it better to join day trip tours?

Travel Tips
in august..weather would still be quite cold.maybe bout 15-20 deg celcius.but its bearable. u may be able to catch the snows up in the mountain if lucky.

queen vic market is a definite must..but going to bridge road & direct factory outlet in cheltenham is great place to get some great bargains

docklands have change from the 90s...now there's plenty of apartments & trendy cafes by the quay.

when u are up at dandenong ranges, dont forget to stop by for ms marple's scones & cream & tea.

probably its more advisable to join the tours for the parks..as it may get quite boring hiking alone...or alternatively u can hook up with some people and drive togetherr there..this is easy if u staying at youth hostels..

when u are free..do take a walk along the federation square, queen vic building (the former skate park nest to state library), southbank, the new melb central.
don't forget to have some italian food & gelato at lygon st ;)

hv a great holiday

August weather in Melbourne is usually grey, dull, wet, rainy and cold. Parks will probably be very muddy, but we are in a drought so maybe this year will be different, however that is a typical August in Melbourne, and we have had rain lately, so maybe this will continue.

Parks are quite safe as a general rule, but I wouldn't advise going at night, just in case.
