Am moving to Melbourne with our 4 kids-don't know where to live?

Travel Info
We were planning on Cranbourne area cos affordable and looks like fairly close to everything and lots to do for kids(aged-1-9).heard not great things about area so now confused.Husband fancies Ballarat but looks like middle of no-where to me.Is there much to do there?Need 4 bed house under $350.Open to suggestions. Is west toward Geelong really industrial with big chimneys etc spoiling coastline?-I want somewhere that looks nice, good schools, different things to do-sports esp.preferably near water iwth friendly young families!!!Any ideas please???

Travel Tips
It's difficult because of the high housing prices. As you found out with Cranbourne you have to move a long way out of Melbourne and into a potentially rough area to fit under the $350K budget. You could try Altona Beach in the city's west. Great access to the city, lots of sports, close to a lot of attractions. It is close to refineries but that helps keep the prices down and you don't notice it if the wind comes off the bay.

Further out west is Little River and Lara that both have affordable housing on larger blocks and are less than 1 hour to Melbourne. Not as rough as Werribee and far enough from the Geelong refineries.

Out east or south east you need to be a long way out to get affordable housing.
Others
Philip Island would be good but it is a bit far from Melbourne City; Geelong is also not bad
For that budget, you could get a place nearer to city, south side of Melbourne; East Brighton is not bad
Where you live often depends on your husband's job. Does he have to travel to the city? Geelong is nice and nera the water. So is Phillip Island but they have a water crisis there. Geelong would probably be your best bet. No big chimneys spoiling the coast. Or if you want to be a bit nearer the city you could try Point Cook but I don't know the cost of housing there.
Between the areas mention I would recommend Carnbourne. If your budget allows you may also consider Rowville or Knox. In terms of being part of a city you are better off in S.E. Melbourne rather than Geelong or Ballarat
The talk of real estate people is Greater Dandenong, the state government has just spilled a lot of money to totally fix up the whole city, schools, shopping complexes, train stations, there is also some really great schools around there. Parks and public places are on the mend there are a lot of young families moving in there at the moment. hope that helps
