Travel Tips
I love Melbourne.

And I can say that unbiasedly as I was born and grew up in New South Wales ( state capital there being Sydney for the non-aussies reading this)

Melbourne is accessible and friendly and pleasant. She is a Grand Old Lady with a youthful spark of personality.

Culturally diverse ( i believe in a break down there was found to be something like two hundred different peoples AT LEAST) ... and generally amiable between the groups (sure like all places you can find your morons who start a fight for no reason but WILL use race as an excuse BUT i believe this is infrequent here and happens all around the world)

Generally a wonderfully safe city ( not saying bad things never happen but over-all I feel safe there), fairly clean and there's something for everybody.

As for whether *we* ( can say that have lived here now for over 20 yrs) will accept you as a Scot ... wll it depends on you as a person .. I'd say we will

We're actually looking at this time as if we are going to have a *traditional* Melbourne winter ... somewhat bleak and cold and hopefully wet (we need the rain badly after being in drought for so long) .... winter , for the first time in a few years.
But if you arrive then , ie earlier than October, .. I am sure that won't bother you.. my scottish work-mate thrives on this kind of weather.

come to melbourne, enjoy your stay :)

I loved Melbourne it is the most European city (Adelaide after) in Aus I would say. However some naughty bits like Richmond and St.Kilda. There is a lot happening but wouldn't know what it is like to live there.
It is a great city with something for everyone. It is charming, diverse, great shopping, great for sporting events, pretty with the Yarra river going through it and river walkways as well as parks and gardens. It has the countryside quite nearby and also the coastal resorts of places like St Kilda and Williamstown. Lots of day trips can be done from Melbourne too and it is the port for going to Tasmania as well. The casino in Melbourne is great. The trams bring real character to the city too. The weather is alot more european than other areas of Australia and you can experience 4 seasons in one day. It can be cold, wet, windy and sunny. I would choose it as a place to live in if I was emigrating to Oz. I have a friend now living in Geelong which is towards the coast, outside the city and it seems a great place for families.
Melbourne is a great city to live in. There's something for everyone. Not dirty like Sydney, but has that old charm. Also not dead like Adelaide! I think it's got the best of everything!
i have lived in Melbourne for the best part of my life....(also lived in Sydney for 7 years)
Melbourne offers something for everyone....when your young there are heaps of great schools, groups, clubs etc....when your a little older there is great nightlife and heaps of party time......once you have found that special someone there is lots of romance and wonderful restaurants....when you have a young family there parks and family entertainment are high quality affordable and endless....not sure about twilight years....im not there yet.....
oh and did i mention the great shopping.....weeeelllll the shopping is fantastic....
I live in Melbourne and it's so much fun. Too many places to visit and don't forget the sightseeing.
