Fun things to do in Melbourne?

Travel Info
I am travelling to Melbourne with my bf for a long weekend in Sept. What are some fun things that we could do as a couple? We are both 29 and enjoy doing normal stuff together - ie nothing extreme. Also tips for somewhere nice to stay would be much appreciated.

Travel Tips
Firstly, somewhere nice to stay:

1. Causeway Inn on the Mall (Bourke Street)
2. Explorers Hotel Melbourne (Spencer Street)
3. Hotel Ibis Melbourne (Therry Street)
4. Mercure Hotel Welcome Melbourne (Little Bourke Street)
5. Quality Hotel Batman's Hill (Collins Street)
6. Harbour View Apartment Hotel (Latrobe Street)
7. Langham Hotel Melbourne (Southgate Avenue)
8. Sofitel Melbourne (Collins Street)
9. Crown Towers aka Casino (Whiteman Street)

All these range from $100+ to $400+ per room per night and are located in the heart of the city, within easy walking distances from major shopping malls and eating places.

Things to do:

As you're spending a long weekend, you can consider the following 'tourist' trips:

1. Daytrip to Phillip Island and see the penguin parade
2. 2D1N trip to Great Ocean Road + Grampians
3. Take the free tram ride around the city square
4. Enjoy a romantic hot air balloon ride in Yarra Valley
5. Enjoy nature at Healesville Sanctuary and Dandenong Ranges
6. If you can afford the time, a hopover to neighbouring Tasmania can be considered
7. Spend a day exploring the city >> bargain hunting, cheap food, cafes, Chinatown, and not forgetting the Casino!
Others
definatly a footy game at the MCG
lunch on the river at southbank
check out the events at fed square
out zoo is always a fun day out :)
Yes, the Zoo's are good. Check out Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Melbourne Zoo. They all offer different things.

Also, check out the Docklands - lots of nice restaurants by the water.

There are lots of nice places to stay, it just depends on your taste and budget.

Couple of websites which may help with other things you might like to do:

Melbourne is a very 'happening' and busy city, so keep an eye on the websites.
an ideal weekend in melbourne to me would be to stay in the city...there are a heap of great hotels...but my preference if money is no issue would be the westin or the casino.....you have to experience chapel street in prahran...great coffee shops and exclusive stores.....if you are after romance a gondola ride on the yarra is great for one evening.....a stroll through the city by day and then to south bank for a flutter at the casino and great dining on the edge of the yarra or the docklands our newest attraction for dining......enjoy your weekend.....melbourne has so much to offer....
Here are some places that I like going to:

Southbank (Crown Casino) because theres heaps of nightlife, buskers, restraunts, free stuff

Queen Victoria market - Is a must do!

Fed Square - its weird, famous, free and easy to get to

MCG and surrounding area - lots on parkland and statues

inner city suburbs like Carlton and Brunswick - Bohemia!!!

St Kilda - Beach, Luna Park and some great bike trails

The city centre itself - Swanston St mall, Trams, National gallery of Victoria (its free and pretty nice to see)

Docklands - another spot for partying and getting drunk, also has Telstra Dome which gets nicely lit up at night.

Hope this helps!
