Is it better for an international student coming to AU to have secured housing before arrival?

Travel Info
I'm wondering whether I should secure student housing before I leave or whether I should stay in a hostel for a few days and search after I've arrived.

Travel Tips
G'day,

I used to be an international students in Melbourne and still assisting newly arrived international student. I will try to help you with informations,

For international students, if you are over 18yrs old there are 3 options:
1. Stay in on-campus accommodation, assuming that your school/uni got one. You will be sharing most amenities with the others and some may provide single, some only shared rooms. Some students like this options b'cos you got friends and easy access to campus services such as libraries and computer labs (handy for assignments later). Some dun like it b'cos of noise.
2. Stay in temporary accommodation like hostel. This can be arranged by the school/uni accommodation services before you come to Australia. Once arrived, you can then try to find apartment/flat with your classmates. At least you can see and you know the location before signing the lease.
3. Stay in homestay (live with Australian family). This can be arranged by the school/uni accommodation services before you come to Australia.

If you are under 18yrs old, your options will only be 1 or 3, as you are not allowed to stay by yourself or with friends as per your student visa regulations.

The story told by sebcue did happen to some newly arrived international students, although not very often and he does have a point, prepare early and you'll be OK. This is a good sign, at least you try to find out as early as you can.

Hope this helps. E-mail me at mikegun@studentfirst.com.au if you have any more questions abt coming to Australia. Good luck and welcome to Australia :)
Others
I would wait until after you arrive.
1) you really need to see any place before you sign the lease
2) if you are sharing a flat or unit - you both need to meet each other before hand.

There is more chance of finding student accommodation on the community notice board at the campus you are attending.

Backpackers Hostels are cheap and very comfortable to stay in till you find something suitable to your needs.

You can always research other option on::::

Get student housing first. When you first arrive, you're not going to find housing just in a few days, and you won't know the places well enough to make a decision, unless you buy a car in just a few days, it's gonna be tough to get around on your own. Sign up for student housing for a short period of time, then strikes out on your own. By then you would have known the places, made new friends, it's a lot easier through friends and people you trust.
I have been an international student 8 years ago.I should tell you accomodation is a very important issue.....It is very important for your health...I went to a student hostel when I arrived....the first thing happened was getting sick....it is noisy...you can not study well...you can not wash your clothes in your own washing machin...you can not cook your own food...I was always sick...I got chicken pox and the fungal skin infection...I knew a lot of others who got other skin problems....It is stressful when you arrive....I suggest you search for your own place if you can.....you can rest and sleep better and study better too....I think you will be safer from harrasment of some others too...although it depends where you choose to go...
you can find a homestay at the beginning. also, your school can arrange it for you. you don't need to sign contact, and only 2 weeks advance notice. that can be much easier.
