Travel Tips
Last year's Melbourne in August was quite mild. Yes, we had some very cold nights, but we also had quite warm days - the lowest was 2.8C and the warmest was 23.6. Also we were having temperatures up to 23C until Mid May. These temperatures are fairly typical. But the truth is that the weather is usually somewhere in between, with the temperatures dropping quite dramatically once the sun goes down and quite a bit of rain. The wind can be VERY cold, but often if you are somewhere out of the wind, it can be very comfortable. It does not snow in Melbourne - sometimes only for a few hours on the outskirts of the city but not often.

I suggest that you bring a range of clothing to cover extremes and to dress in layers so that you can take off something as you get warmer. (Oh, and a big bag to carry it all in!) If I am going to be out in the cold weather I will usually wear a thermal singlet, with a long sleeve top, a jumper, and jeans with my coat and scarf. I don't wear hats as I don't like how they look on me but a lot of people wear them (and look good)! If I am going to be inside I will not wear the thermal singlet. Perhaps things such as those would help you to stay warm and comfortable too.
Remember that if you have forgotten something or don't feel warm enough - it will always be a good excuse to go visit our fabulous stores for some clothes shopping!!!!
Oh, and don't forget to bring your sunglasses (as the sky and the light is different from Europe), your boots and a pair of comfortable walking shoes to see our beautiful city in comfort. I hope you enjoy your stay. Source(s): Australian Bureau of Meteorology and Melbourne Travel Guide

It's been sooo cold lately. I've been freezing so bad lately! Make sure you have a couple of warm jackets and heaps of pants, sock scarves, gloves, thermal underwear! I'm totally unprepared winter has hit real bad now not sure what it will be like in Aug. ciao!
All the above. When I lived there i'd buy boots 1/2 a size larger so I could wear fluffy socks to help keep feet warm
Its not that bad, people just dont know how to dress for the cold. You will only need coats scarves and hats etc if you are outside for any length of time. Most (all) houses have heating. It doesnt snow in the city, just make sure you have an umbrella or rain coat as it can rain a bit during that time.
Just pack jeans, wool pants, some nice boots (coming from Italy that shouldnt be a problem) some 3/4 sleeve tops, a couple of jumpers and a coat. Anything you forget to pack youcan buy here.
