Where is the most earthquake-prone region in Australia? |
Travel Info Where is the most earthquake-prone region in Australia? Travel Tips This one is hard to answer as there are no major fault lines in Australia. As a result you could pick any area in Australia to live and almost be guaranteed no earthquakes. However we still do get the one off earthquake now and then. Earthquakes never occur inland, so you would be looking at anywhere along the outside coast of Australia for earthquake regions. My best guess would be northern coasts, as this is near Indonesia and PNG, which have a few more earthquakes than us. Other than that, you won't find much. If you wanted a brief history of earthquakes in australia follow the link below. The last major earthquake was in 1989 in Newcastle which caused a handful of deaths. Far more danger from cyclones and wildfires. Have we ever had an earthquake? not sure... sorry Australia is not on the edge of a plate so why do we have earthquakes? The Indian-Australian plate is being pushed north and is colliding with the Eurasian, Philippine and Pacific plates. The stress from this collision is released during an earthquake. Adelaide has the highest earthquake hazard of any capital city, with more medium-sized earthquakes in the past 50 years than any other. South Australia is being slowly squeezed sideways by about 0.1 mm/yr. Over many years stress builds up in rocks until they break and cause an earthquake. We can't predict when earthquakes happen but measuring these changes, combined with Adelaide's earthquake history, helps us understand when the next big earthquake might happen. Australia's largest recorded earthquake occurred in 1941 at Meeberrie, WA. Its magnitude is estimated to be 7.2 but fortunately it occurred in a remote area. A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred at Meckering in 1968, causing extensive damage to buildings, and was felt over most of southern WA. Earthquakes of magnitude 4 or more are fairly common in Western Australia, with one occurring approximately every five years in the Meckering region. http://www.ga.gov.au/urban/factsheets/ea... I don't think Australia suffers from earthquakes. Thry occur when there are faults & Australia has none. In fact it is perfect. |
