Travel Tips
Hi MAC. I live in Melbourne, Australia and I can seriously say that some people in our beautiful country are quite racist. But, having said this, you will get that in any country and usually worse. We are very accomodating to other races, religions and cultures - we seem to cater to everyone's tastes. If anything, you hear a lot of people here saying we are becoming "too politically correct". We are VERY sensitive in how we come across as a nation and there are actually very strict laws preventing discrimation based on race, sex, religion, etc. Especially in the work place.

So No, I don't believe Australia is a racist country, quite the opposite actually.

i have been to Brisbane, Gold Coast, twice to Perth, Melbourne and Sydney... i find all the australians very friendly and helpful. i have not been through any bad experience or any racist acts... i too have heard comments of such but of all my experiences, i never had to agree with those comments.
There will always be racists anywhere, even United States, UK, Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other muslim countries. But I know that the Australian government is NOT racist, and for me, that is good enough. You can have some rednecks in the outbacks who are racists, but as long as the government is not, and as long as the rights of every group of race is protected, that is good.

Racist people have problems, and I think majority of australians are good educatd people who know much better than being racists. As a non-anglo-saxon, I have been welcome by so many wonderfulAustralians, even into their Christmas party. The minority racists just tarnish the image of majority of Australians.
Personal experience living in Australia for 2.5 years.
No not racist at all.

I have a question for you. Why do you think we may be a racist country?
Is it to do with the way Australian aborigines are treated?
Is it to do with the race riot that happened one day in Sydney?

Just like alot of places there is a racist element but overall it's far from racist.

Take for instance last week there was a soccer game between Australia and Greece in Melbourne. There are alot of Greeks who have emigrated to Aus over the years. Amongst the crowd there were several young people wearing Greek shirts with Australian scarves. That's what Australia is like.

Most of us come from another country whether it be England, Ireland, Greece, Italy, New Zealand or whereever. We mix well and it's a great country to be in.

Even the "redneck" outback people is a bit of a myth if you ask me. Most people in the outback - or country - are in fact the friendliest people to outsiders you will find in the whole of Australia.
to answer former backpacker's question i think some people are concerned about racism in australia because of how the aborigines are treated (and also the horrendous way they were treated in the past). i think people have heard stories about what the aborigines have been through and the fact that they still are ill treated in some parts of the country purely due to their race. also i think people have observed some distaste by some australians towards immigrants (i suppose more so the ones that don't mix with everyone else). and also, i'd say the sydney riots to a lesser extent (to me personally anyway) may have played a role. anyway my approach to when i go to study in australia is to stay away from the rural areas or other areas that i've been told about. no need to leave one country and experience racism and go to another (as a foreigner no less) and experience the same thing.
Overall I would say no, of course you can go to places in any country that can be a problem. The big cities no problems at all, in a bad neighborhood in any city of the world its a possible problem. I have been going to Australia for 20 years, and overall I say no, its very safe and freindly to all people.
