What is Australia like? |
Travel Info Im studying abroad in Australia and I have some questions. How are the people? How do they feel about Americans? I have heard that racism isnt a problem but the population stats say there are little to no black people, how is it for black people over there? And since im studying there for six months, Im wonderin are there accomodations for black women as far as hair is concerned. Also how are the schools? What are the major problems people face when they study abroad in australia? Im just scared to leave home for so long and not have a clue about where I am going. Travel Tips Do not be scared Australians are fairly laid back and friendly. You will find that there are many nationalities and cultures living here. I am assuming that you are going to Melbourne as this is the city you selected with your question. I am sure you will love it there (they still have trams). Like in all countries there are good schools and bad schools. The major problems facing anyone moving overseas is the language and as an American you already speak English so that won't be a problem. You will find that we use different words for somethings (eg the trunk of a car is called the boot here). Through the National Basketball League quite a few AfricanAmericans have come here to play and some have even remained on a permanent basis and have been welcomed by the Australian community. If you are going to Melbourne have a look at this site http://www.visitvictoria.com/ Enjoy your time in Australia and good luck with your studies. Others Basically as an Australian I can honestly say that if you are a nice person you will have no trouble at all. Australians are very much the treat you as they find you kinds of folks. There is a little tension with the native aboriginal people in some parts but that is usually due to social dysfunction caused by alcohol abuse and not to much by race. Australia is a multi-cultural society. We enjoy the company of people from all around the world. Also we get enough TV from the USA to now all about the issues effecting "black:" people so don't worry about us not understanding. You'll have a ball. |
