Best neighborhoods to live in in Melbourne?

Travel Info
I'm moving to Melbourne in January, and I am looking for suggestions on neighborhoods to look for flats in.

I'll be a grad student at the University of Melbourne, so something relatively close (max. 20 min commute) to the school with a fun and lively atmosphere would be great. Any suggestions?

Travel Tips
G'day,

Uni of Melb... Parkville, Carlton, Fitzroy, Brunswick, North Melbourne, and even in the city itself.

You may also want to visit the link that I provided on the bottom from the uni's website. Hopefully it helps a bit as well.

Good luck. Source(s): http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/housi...

Other Travel Tips
Carlton, North Carlton, Parkville and Brunswick have the easiest public transport to Melbourne Uni (Sydney Rd tram and Lygon Street tram). Fitzroy and North Fitzroy are reasonably close if you have a bike or like to walk, but the East-West commute to Melbourne Uni isn't as easy as the North-South.

All pretty fun areas, and there are lots of share houses and flats.
Got to head to St Kilda
I guess it all depends on the type of scene you are looking for and your budget

but from your description i suggest an inner city area such as

Carlton , Brunswick, Flemington, Kensington, Collingwood, Fitzroy , Richmond, North Melbourne, South Yarra
or go near the beach at Port Melbourne , South Melbourne , St Kilda , Elwood

- these areas all have good public transport

There is a shortage of good rental properties at the moment so the competition is fierce,

to get an idea of the cost of rent and type of properties available

good luck
South Yarra

i love it
If your budget doesn't extend to the inner suburbs, there are places like Nothcote and Thornbury which are about 5 - 6 kms from the CBD and which will be cheaper than Carlton/Fitzroy/Brunswick. Also serviced by good public transport - train line and two tram lines. One tram line goes straight through the very popular Brunswick (some great nightlife there).

Clifton Hill is another area you might look at. - close, trams and trains.
