How long does it take to get from Avalon Airport to Melbourne CBD? How much? |
Travel Info Is it worthwhile getting a cheap flight that goes to Avalon or spend more and get to the airport closer to the CBD? Travel Tips Compare the flight prices carefully. It's not always cheaper to fly to Avalon. If you're felxible with your times you can fly to Tullamarine cheaper and take the cheap skybus into the city in 20 mins. Others around 40 mins cost 15 bucks its pretty rural at avalon tullamarine airport cost 12 to get the shuttle to southern cross station(formaly spencer st station) and about 15-25 mins Don't try taxi it costs too much. Either bus it to Spencer St (eureka) station for about $15 or taxi to geelong and go by train (about $15 all up). Or pay the extra $10 in airfares and go to Tullamarine. Need a lift from there - let me know if u want. BTW most taxis won't actually take you out to avalon either. There is something about zoning rules. Spend more and go to Tullamarine, its much more convenient. There is a bus (Sunbus) from Avalon to Melbourne. It stops at the new Southern Cross transport terminal on Spencer Street. There is also a limited public transport service from Tullamarine to Melbourne. It is slower but the advantage is that you can use the Metlink tickets that can be used on all other public transport in Melbourne. Bus most visitors use the Skybus because it is quick and more frequent. However, it has its own fare structure and tickets and is more expensive than other public transport. Melbourne's public transport system is good and easy to navigate. Fares are cheap with a three-zone (soon to be reduced to two) system that allows unlimited travel within designated time periods. But most people in Melbourne drive cars and few people seem to know much about public transport. Visitors should be warned about trying to ride for free; sometimes it seems that tickets are never checked. But inspections do happen and fines are heavy for not travelling without a valid ticket. Enjoy your visit to Melbourne and riding our public transport system - especially the trams: a Melbourne icon. Avalon is really closer to Geelong and definitely should not be considered a 'melbourne aiport'. |
