I have been granted student Visa in University of Ballarat in Melbourne. I would like to clear some querries? |
Travel Info 1. Which surroundingswill be nearby , cheap & best for rented accomodation as my campus is in Collins Street. 2. Names of schools for my 6 year old son which are nearby to campus which are best & cheap. 3. Estimated total cost of living for a couple alongwith a kid including rented accomodation , schooling , fooding , etc. Travel Tips Try contacting Penelope Irish she is the Housing & Development Officer, Accommodation Services at University of Ballarat. Her phone is 03 5327 9848 -or- Email: p.irish@ballarat.edu.au Schools, near the campus there are a few private schools, I would recommend Carlton Gardens Primary School (03 9663 6502) or Carlton Primary School (03 9347 6022), maybe speak with the schools then work out which school you prefer. If you are on a limited budget I would stay clear of South Yarra Primary School - even though it's a government school it still tends to attract a lot of well to do families and the fees are higher. The further that you can move from the city the cheaper accomodation will be, so it really depends on the times of your classes. A lot of schools have before and after school care that they can watch your child while you are at Uni for the day. If you go down that path then it may be cheaper for you to live further away from the city. I wouldn't even know where to start with the total cost for a couple with a child, bit these are some guesses based on myself aand my husband with our little girl: Food $150 per week Phone $60 per month Mobiles $80 per month (2 mobile phones) Electricity $250 per quarter Water $250 per quarter Gas $150 per quarter Car Rego $500 year Schooling for a 6 year old with uniforms, excusions ect $1000+ per year Rent (we don't rent) between $250 - $350 per week I hope this information helps - good luck Others According to recent reports, rents in Melbourne are around $285 per week for a small apartment, why not check the on-line version of the "Age" newspaper. Use the tram system to get around, it's good and cheap too. 2. Schools, I would be looking at Princess Hill in Carlton, or anything else in South Melbourne, Fitzroy, Richmond, Collingwood. Try not to go anywhere West, as it's a pain re: public transport, and there is moderate to high crime rate. 1. Accomondation, anywhere of the above suburbs would be ok, but my preference is Carlton. But it all depends on if you have the money to live / buy there. Fitzroy / Collingwood would be cheaper options, but then again, they are still going to be pricey. Again, it all comes down to what and where you are prepared to live. If you want to go further out, try Brunswick. More often than not, the Northern and Western Suburbs will be cheaper than the Southern and Eastern. Go get a map, or try www.whereis.com |
