Travel Info I need more information about eco-tourism in Mexico? Travel Tips Check out the San Cristobal area in Chiapas. I've been there and it is a wonderful place to go if you are interested in ecological/cultural aspects of Mexico. This area still has Mayan people who still speak Mayan languages, dress in traditional clothing and have a strange amalgamation of beliefs that mix Catholicism with earlier animistic beliefs. There are lesser known Mayan ruins nearby to see and you get a mix of mountain altitude at the colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas, and jungle at the base of the mountains. This can also be a jumping spot to get to Palenque. There is an organization in San Cristobal called Na Bolom that is dedicated to the preservation and awareness of indigenous people and their environment in the region. It's a great place to stay, situated in an old colonial home with spare, inexpensive sleeping quarters and a phenomenal breakfast eaten communally. They can coordinate trips for you to the outlying towns and such. We did a trip with a small group to San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, then a solo day trip with just a driver to the ruins at Tonina. There is also the Lacandon rainforest at lower altitudes and cloud forest to see at higher altitudes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/na_bolom... http://www.nabolom.org/index_en.html... http://wild-net.com.au/mexico/html/tonin... |
