It really depends on where your going. Places like canada or Mexico or countries that have reciprocal agreements don't require Passports. Other ountries like Bermuda will take a passport or a birth certificate. You should always check with your travel agent or the american embassy of that country to find out if you need a passport. Many times you can find it right on the web. Here is a link for Canada that shows them all.
