Ever seen the image of GUADULUPE in person? |
Travel Info Is it beyond words? (I have always wanted to see it) Travel Tips Yes, I have been to the Basilica in Mexico City and it is quite something. The image itself is kept in sort of an ante-chamber off the main sanctuary. It's about 20 feet off the ground, hanging on the wall, so it's sort of hard to see. There is a moving walkway, like the one at the airport, and you move past the cloak. The grounds are interesting as well. Most pilgrims hike up the hill to the site of the vision, where there is a small church. There is an older chapel northeast of the modern chapel, and it is still in good condition. It's around 400 years old. There is a huge courtyard just east of the new Basilica. The walk up to the Basilica is interesting in and of itself. There are literally dozens of vendors on the street leading up there, and you can get all sorts of religious icons - from very serious images of the Virgen de Guadalupe to Jesus-with-the-following-eyes on crushed velvet. I still have a keychain from there. There is a shrine there where you can light candles. I lit one for some friends who had recently married, and they're still together. You should visit the Basilica. It's a remarkable place for a pilgrimage.
