How much is the monthly cost of living in M茅xico City for an average western couple? |
Travel Info With my wife we want to go privately to Mexico to live and work remotely from there (not as expats). So we would like to know the cost of living there (flat rental, dining out, monthly overhead costs). We dont intend to live on a high but rather average standard. Travel Tips I would be careful of some of the advice you are getting. $200-$350 per month will get you a fairly decent-sized 2-bedroom in a lower class section of the city with very high crime, bad or intermittent water and power service and far away from anything at all interesting. If you want to live in a decent middle class area you will pay from $650 to $1300 per month. If you want to live in the best area, plan on $2000 and up. Depending on where you are from, you will find many things much more expensive than you might think they should be in Mexico and you would be right. This is not "Mexico" its the "DF" (or Mexico City) and its the most expensive place in the country to live. (Its more expensive to live here than in Cancun!) Of course, if you want to live like a lower class Mexican, things will be much cheaper, but in those areas the power is often out 4-5 hours a day, the water runs 12 hours a day, (or between 2 and 6 every Saturday in some parts of Ixtapalapa), and the police are only around in order to protect the criminals while they rob your house and/or car. That being said, it can still be a wonderful place to live. There are fabulous restaurants available in some parts of the city for the same as you pay at home. There are many really good ones for probably half that. And once you become more "Mexican," well then you will really find the bargains! |
