Does anyone know if Mexico City is comfortable for walking? |
Travel Info I would like to go to Mexico City and not deal with car rentals etc. Does anyone know if it is a city that is good for walking around in? Also, does anyone know if cab fare is equally expensive, or maybe if it is cheaper if thats what it comes to? Thanx! Travel Tips i've been to mexico city 16 + times, and the walking there,i wouldn't say is "comfortable", but it's duable. as long as you stay on the sidewalk, you'll be fine. although the sidewalks aren't at level, they're kinda bumpy with cracks and such, so, you gotta be in pretty good health to walk there. you'll see tons of people walking in the streets as well. it's a normal thing. if you must cross the street, use the cross walk and walk very quickly. the drivers have NO consideration what so ever for pedestrians. you always gotta keep your eyes peeled. and don't even THINK about j-walking. you'll be more than likely to get hit by a car, trust me! the cab fares are usually alright, they're not too bad, but if they know your a westerner, they'll try and get as much money out of you as they can. they did this to me and my family. i'm straight up mexican american, but my parents are from Mexico. so, i was with my mother and we took a taxi from the bus terminal to my grandmother's house. it cost about 7-8 USD. which is the correct price, since my mother grew up in mexico city and knows the normal prices and such for things. but my father did the MOST idiotic thing ever. it was my father and me in a taxi my father was talking with the taxi driver and then my father tells the taxi driver that we're from the USA visting family here in mexico. and we were coming from the bus terminal to my grandmother's house. like i had done with my mother . but we ended up paying 19 USD for a taxi ride that should've been 7-8 USD and all becuz my father told the driver we were american. and the taxi driver had cleared the taxi-meter before we got to our destination. he cleared it so we wouldn't be able to see how much we REALLY owed him, which should've been 7-8 USD. but we didn't bother to argue with the driver because SOME taxi drivers carry guns, incase some customer don't want to pay the price that they owe them. so actually, if they KNOW your a westerner by just looking at you, your better off NOT taking a taxi at all. although we do take a taxi all the time while we're staying in mexico city, but we don't look western which is an advantage. i hope it all works out for you. take care. |
