Is there anything special going on in Mexico City on Christmas Eve/Day or should I flee to the beach?

Travel Info
I will be in Mexico for three weeks in December and January. I am going to travel around Jalisco but wanted to stop in Mexico City for a few days. I will be arriving on December 21st and wanted to know if there is anything special going on in Mexico City on Christmas Eve or Day. If there is nothing going on and everything will be closed, I would rather be on the beach than in a dead city. Alternatively, is there anything going on in Puerto Vallarta or anywhere else in Jalisco on those days that would be worth going for? Any ideas?

Travel Tips
It really depends on whether or not you have any Mexican friends. Christmas is a real family "do" here in Mexico and about 98% of the people will be spending Christmas with the family. If you don't have a family down here to spend it with, there will be NOTHING happening for you!

You should also be aware that "Christmas" in Mexico is celebrated on Christmas Eve. Like the States, people start getting off work early, then usually they go to mass, then everybody gets together for the big dinner, (often turkey) usually eaten around 12:00 midnight. Then comes the gift opening and then a party which can actually continue till the sun comes up in some families!

Christmas Day itself is a lot like Boxing Day in the US (without the big mall sales) its a day of rest, family time and left-overs.

Some of the most fun are the "posadas" or special Christmas parties celebrated every evening from December 16 to 24 (meaning there will be one somewhere every evening between these dates.)

If you do not have friends in Mexico City to spend Christmas with, I wouldn't bother. It is such an intimate family type event that there will be very little stuff for you to do even at the big hotels. If you will be in-country for the Christmas season, I would spend it in Puerta Vallarta or any other resort town. There, there will be LOTS of foreigners like yourself and the good hotels there WILL make a "big deal," probably putting on their very own "authentic" Mexican posadas each night at different hotels and doing up a great Christmas dinner. It won't be truly "Mexican" but it will be a mix of culture, probably lots of fun and include both tourists and native Mexicans.

Oh and if I don't see you while you're down here: "Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad!"
