Sometimes, northbound routes out of Mexico City can get easily congested, so I suggest you take a bus early in the morning to avoid traffic. Sunday is usually the day with less traffic in the city, but it's probably also the day it's most crowded in Teotihuacan (where the pyramids are) because it's free for Mexican citizens.
