Where to live in or near Miami to raise a family?

Travel Info
My family and I are considering moving to the Miami area this summer, and I need some advice as to where to buy a home. My wife would be attending graduate school at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. I'm assuming that I'd probably find a job in or near downtown Miami. Where are good, SAFE places to live that are within, say, a 40-minute commute of both these locations? I have two small children, so I'd like to be in an area with good schools (a concern from what I've heard about Miami), and that provides age-appropriate activities, such as swimming lessons at a county pool, children's ballet, playgrounds, etc. Also, I can spend around $550,000-$650,000 on a home. I guess I'm looking for a good place for upper-middle-class working families. Part of the problem is that I don't know what traffic is like, and how long it will take to get around during rush hour. For instance, would Pembroke Pines be too far? What about Sweetwater or Olympia Heights?
Thanks for your help!

Travel Tips
I would stay away from Sweetwater, the traffic there during the day is insane because of the Turnpike, the 836, and because of FIU. If you stay around Kendall, both you and your wife could take the train to work and UM (there's stations for both UM and downtown on the MetroRail). If you live close enough to Dadeland (US1 and Kendall Drive), you can drive over to the train station, park, and take the train up to UM and Downtown. I know a lot of friends who live throughout Kendall, and it seems like a great area to have your children grow up in. Now that I'm thinking about Doral, it's not a great area for traffic to get to downtown or UM (the 836 is always a mess getting into and out of downtown during rush hour, and the 826 is filled with construction which won't be over until who knows when). There's some areas in NE Miami-Dade that are decent (Miami Shores is pretty nice, so are areas of North Miami Beach and Aventura). I live in North Miami and drive to downtown for school, and the commute isn't all that bad, it's about 40 minutes down US1. I know Broward is filled with great areas to have children grow up in, but if you're wife is going to school at UM, it's a bit of a hike for her. I'd recommend Kendall out of all of the areas in Miami-Dade County. Source(s): personal experience

Other Travel Tips
why dont u try miami florida i heard it's good living there or try north carolina.
Pembroke Pines would not be too far... Hop onto 95 or take the Turnpike to your destinations... I've a friend who lives in Miramar (near Pembroke Pines. Also, Hollywood is nice... Fort Lauderdle and the western suburbs are nicer/safer locations than Miami... Email me and I could get you his email address...
I live in Coral Gables....really pretty, but if you're buying a house it's pretty expensive, but worth a try because it's a gorgeous exclusive area. If not in Coral Gables, try Doral, it's an up and coming area with some nice homes. People may suggest Kendall, but traffic on US1 is pretty bad in the morning from kendall towards downtown, and vice versa during the rush hour home. There's plenty to do and places to work in Coral Gables and Doral...law firms, architecture firms, doctors offices, banks, university, high end restaurants, and a hospital or two, etc. Stay away from little havana, carol city, and NE Miami. Personally, I think you'd fall in love with Coral Gables...its beauty is mesmerizing, peaceful, and the people are friendly, educated, and it's a professional area.
