My Bday 20 Oct- thinking Miami Beach - Enough sun or all rain / hurricanes then? |
Travel Info I have a big birthday in October and thinking of visiting Miami Beach. I come from UK and concerned about hurricane season. How likely is it that I might bump into one? Will we get enough sun if we come for a week or shall I stay away and perhaps go west coast US instead? - Is there any nice resorts on west coast too? Travel Tips OK, so I went to south beach in Oct. of 2005 and I live in Los Angeles. The weather was perfect, it didn't rain on us once and it was in the 80's to low 90's. The water in the ocean was as warm as bath water. So it was perfect. If you are really worried about a hurricane, then you might think about travel insurance. Make sure that you are buying insurance that will reimburse any expenses you can think of involving a hurricane. South beach is fun and you can actually get into most clubs. So I'd go to Miami. OK, so the west coast is cold compared to the east coast (year round). I will assume you were thinking L.A. The weather here changes from area to area. You can have a 10 degree (farenheit) change in temp just driving 10 mins from one area to another. So in Santa monica it may top out at 70 degrees but then you drive to the San Fernando Valley and it's 85 degrees. I guess I would advise against the west coast trip if you are coming for warm weather. The water is freezing in the pacific. The winds coming off the pacific are very cold as well. We had to wear coats to the beach in October (we are from a cold weather state originally, so it's not because we are wimps, lol). We just moved out in September, so I'm not sure about west coast resorts. From what I remember (from past west coast trips) and what I've seen, the west coast is not as developed as the east coast (where hotels are plentiful). The clubs on the west coast are scattered about and are nearly impossible to get into, unless you show up around 10PM, when the doors open. Oh, and the traffic on the west coast, especially in L.A. is horrible. In Miami cabs are plentiful and affordable. Hope this helps. Source(s): personal experience Other Travel Tips I grew up in South Florida and I think Miami Beach is a lot of fun with so much to do. It would be a great vacation place to have your birthday! Here is some information to help you make your decision. I can't help much for the west coast though sorry. Hurricane season is June 1st - Nov. 30th. The average temp. of Miami Beach in October is 78.7F. You can check out http://www.weatherbase.com it has average temps for other places you might be interested in. Miami has great weather all year round (in the 80's fahrenheit usually) and the water's great (super clear, turquoise, 86 degrees F). The risk of a hurricane is very low as they rarely hit Miami. Besides, even if there was a hurricane brewing somewhere out in the Atlantic you'd be notified weeks in advance. It will probably be very warm and sunny the whole time as October isn't a rainy month. I grew up around hurricanes and lived in the south all my life. It's usually between june to november, but most of 'em are usually just tropical storms or something, but with the seas warming up, i aint so sure. Have fun! I live in the Fort Lauderdale area, hurricane season is coming to an end around your birthday. Just keep in mind that in October of 2005 we were hit by hurricane Wilma which did quite a bit of damage around here. We were lucky to get by unscathed last year, no storms what so ever. If you do decide to come this way, the weather will be pretty nice, still very warm, but not as humid as our summers. The weather in Miami in October is usually great, still warm but not oppressive or storms as in the summer. Yes, it's still hurricane season at that time, but chances are more than likely you won't bump into one. Hope you have fun! |
