Is Miami, Florida a safe place to visit?

Travel Tips
I live in Ft. Lauderdale and never venture to Miami. I disagree with the answer about asking locals for directions. You will get car-jacked. It happens all the time in Miami. My guy works in Miami and agrees with me 100 percent. If you're going to go, do not ask anyone for directions on the street; go inside a store or restaurant. Don't have your luggage and maps out in plain sight where people can see that you are a tourist. Tourists are targeted here, kinda like a third world country sometimes. I've seen it on the news way too many times."Tourist killed asking for directions; thieves smash window of rental car; Tourist robbed after taking wrong exit".... P.S. Ok mlaw, she wanted an opinion and I gave her mine...no need for personal attacks...here's a quote from usatourist.com..."Safety and personal security are always concerns in any large city. Miami received some unfavorable publicity a few years ago when several tourists were robbed and murdered. The city does have a high crime rate, but it is still relatively safe for anyone exercising common sense. Do not venture away from the tourist areas into dangerous neighborhoods after dark! Always lock cameras, luggage and valuables out of sight in the trunk of your car! Never leave money or valuables in your hotel room! " No facts different that what I stated that I've learned simply by watching our local news. Source(s): Lifelong South Florida resident...

South Beach,Miami Beach. area is 100% safe.
once You get there ask for directions from locals residents.
I don't know what paranoid nightmare world Marsha lives in, but millions of tourists visit Miami every year, walk around with cameras & maps & asking directions in multiple languages without getting murdered.
You should be fine.
I live about 45 minutes north of Miami.
It's a bit confusing trying to get around. There are more highways and streets than you could ever imagine!
As for safety, there are many shady places around there, like dark and unlit. Depending on the area there might be some homeless wandering around, but from my experience they are harmless.
If you're visiting, you're probably going to see all the tourists spots, so in that case you will be more than safe!
live nearby, friends in miami.
They have less crime (murders) than jacksonville if that helps.!
There are some parts of coconut grove that u dont wanna go to tho. I kinda almost got robbed out there and I was with my bf. There's a touristy place with hotels and shops then down the street a lil neighborhood area, dont go out there alone
