Does Ft. Lauderdale have an "inner city" or just a "downtown"? |
Travel Info It's common in most urban areas to use the description "inner-city schools", but are there any schools in Fort Lauderdale that could rightfully be called that? I think the city is too small to really have ANYTHING "inner". Any input on this? Travel Tips if its really small then there is no inner city Others i wouldnt call it an inner-city (they are too small) but they definitely have some crumby areas. as a student in Fort.Lauderdale our school system is not located as a city district it is a county run system. yes there are schools in the million dollar neighborhoods and there are some on South Andrews Avenue and the schools that are closer to I-95 tend to be the "Reputated schools" Yes, it has a downtown, but its one of those suburban downtowns with mainly a few office buildings & banks, & some mid & upscale restaurants. Until recently nobody actually lived there, but as a result of the building boom there are now clusters of high rise yuppie condominiums. But FtL. does have a black "ghetto," if that's what you mean. Generally, it is the Northwestern quarter of the city, west of Andrews Ave & north of Broward Blvd to about NW 5th Ave & then north of the river & extending west at least until I-95. All of the inner city urban pathologies are there. There are similar ghettos along the Hallandale/Hollywood border and in Pompano. I concur with MLaw. Usually, it is the "Northwest" quandrant of most cities that are "inner cities". I don't know how it worked out that way, but it has. I'm familiar with the Fort Lauderdale area and I also grew up in Hallandale. So I know the areas well. And to answer your other question, Ft. Lauderdale has a downtown as well. It happens to be in the Southeast quandrant of the city. |
