I'm moving to Miami, FL? |
Travel Info What neighborhoods should I stay away from(I really don't care about the language barrier since I'm almost fluent in Spanish)? I need to live near the design district for work. I'd like to find a reasonable apartment as in less than 1000 per month. Tell me if I'm being unrealistic on pricing. I currently live on the Gulf Coast and I'm wondering how different things will be. Travel Tips I'm fluent too, but the lack of English here still pisses me off. Anyway, I live in the design district. Actually, Little Haiti, which is right next door. Traditionally (meaning, in the past), the design district wasn't a really fashionable place to live. However, now it is. And expensive. Between 41st St NE and 50th st NE west of NE 2nd Ave is a really darling little neighborhood. The house values are coming down, but still expect to pay more than $400,000 for a starter house there. you might be able to rent one for around $1k, but don't forget your utilities. They're a little cheaper east of NE 2nd ave, but that's not quite as cute a neighborhood - no landscaping, etc. On the west side of the street, it is green and lush and pretty. The east side is kind of barren, which in Miami is a sign of lack of money. Anyway, I rent an apartment (2 bdrm/1ba loft - meaning DR/LR/KIT are all in one big space with a 14-ft peaked ceiling) near 51st street - 1 mile from the design district - walkable in the cooler months - and our rent is $1300/mo. It's called "DPlace" or Design Place". It's truly in Little Haiti, but they call it design place to make it seem like it's in the better neighborhood. You can get an apt. here I think for around $900/mo. it might be a studio or 1 bdrm, but it's a nice central location, there's a beautiful swimming pool, it is a gated community, and there's a little cafe near the pool. I've been here about 3 years, and other than hating Miami in general this place isn't so bad. It used to be a crack neighborhood, and before that, army barracks. So the buildings are old and not the least bit glamorous. But for the location, there's a lot of development happening here. Look up midtown miami...that's just south of the design district and is a condominium/mini-villa going up right now. The shops ( or shoppes, as they call them) are starting to open - a Target (thank GOD!), Marshalls, Ross, PetSmart, Loehmann's, Circuit City, and other harbingers of over-development. However, as it is the only bastion of Americanism in the area, I welcome all of it with open arms. All in all, there's a lot of construction in the area right now, which is a pain, but it's going to be THE place to live if you're not on the beach. Just north and east of DPlace is a neighborhood called Morningside; this is a beautiful enclave of mansions. Literally. And some normal houses too, but it's very spendy. And further north up Biscayne from there are all kinds of trendy shops, bars, etc. opening up to cater to the younguns who are moving to the area. With the condo glut in Miami, who knows...you may be able to snag something at Midtown cheaply once it's built. But in the meantime, look up DPlace ( http://www.dplaceapartmentsmiami.com/... )and maybe give it a visit to see what you think. Source(s): Worked in Design District, lived in neighborhood 3 years.
