How is the degree of violence in montreal ? |
Travel Info How is the degree of violence in montreal ? Travel Tips Montreal has one of the lowest violent crime rates in North America for a city of its size. This does not mean that there are not crimes here, but it does mean that your chances of being a victim of crime are quite low. We only have about 50 murders a year, and the subway is monitored, well-lit, and clean, keeping criminal elements from loitering around. The big crime areas are presently in Montreal North, Cote-des-Neiges, and parts of NDG. Youth gangs are starting to make themselves known by wearing the colors of LA gangs (red and blue) and there have been a few assaults on innocent people who happen to be wearing the wrong color in those areas. The other big crime that is happening lately is home invasions. At least one group of people are going around and breaking into homes, tying up the family that is inside, and then robbing them of valuables. The target has predominantly been the west island homes. The biker gangs that were in the Montreal news every day in the 80's and 90's are rarely heard about anymore. I would check out CBC News or the Montreal Gazette newspaper for articles to find out more. Source(s): http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/... http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/in... Other Travel Tips I was there a couple of years ago and all I saw were a few bar brawls, mostly Americans. They can drink at 19 in Canada! There have been a few murders and armed robberies over the last couple of years. But it's a lot safer than similar cities in the US or London. I'm born and raised here, violence depends on which area you live in. Honestly, most bar brawls downtown are caused by tourists (american and from toronto). Legal drinking age here is 18. As for murders, there are less than 30 per year, and most are gang related I was born and have lived most of my life here and I still feel safe at night at 3:00 A.M. There are bar brawls but it's quiet if compared to Toronto. |
