First timer to Montreal. Only have 2 nights !?

Travel Info
Mom traveling in July with 17 & 21 y.o. daughters. Driving from Northern NY (Lake Regis). Want to be in an area where we will be able to take in the most in our 2 days without having to drive alot.

Travel Tips
Three easy ones :

Old Montreal (Subway station Place d'Armes) you'll get at least 3 museums (Science, arts, history), shops, artisans shops, nice views to St-Lawrence River/boats, nice old buildings, Imax movies, cathedral, all around maybe 10 to 15 minutes walking distance.

Biod么me (4 reconstituted natural ecosystems), Insectarium and Botanical Garden are all at the same place, with the world largest inclined tower (Olympic stadium). Subway station Pix IX. http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/biodome...

If you want to plan your visits by Subway and bus, here is a great tool to calculate what time it takes and see a map of stations and streets : http://www.stm.info/english/azimuts/a-in...

Fires on wenesday a good idea, you can combine by visiting St-Helen's island where is attraction park (where the fires are the closest) and a more natural/historical park : http://www.laronde.com/larondeen/...

People here are usually really friendly and usually bilingual. If you smile and say "Bonjour", you have less chance to get a "crazy answer" than we do (Montrealers). In fact, a few years ago, 2 journalists made a test : they asked informations to people on the street, in English in Montreal and in French in the rest of Canada and Montreal was the best place by far in Canada to get friendly answers in second language... so never be afraid of asking information to people in English...

Have a nice visit ! Source(s): I lived in Montreal for 8 years and continue to visit every month.
Other Travel Tips
For the best experience reserve at one of the European style hotels created from converted manions and residences on the more eastern (more French-speaking but everyone is bilingual) east side, near Berri and the Quartier Latin and very close to the best-of-Montr茅al parts of The Plateau and walkable to Old Montr茅al. (There are larger and chain hotels in the area also). Right on the m茅tro so you can easily get everywhere else, but in 2 days and nights you will only have a chance to see and experience 5-10% of what Montr茅al has for you. July is also the heart of summer festivals season; be sure to check which are in progress on your visit.
I agree with Marie, it's hard to take in everything in Montreal in just 2 days... here's some links that might help you better prepare for your trip:

I think that if you gals don't want to drive too much and want to do some shopping (I noticed you were coming with your daughters, some girls tend to shop a lot hehe), it would be great to walk on downtown Ste-Catherine St., tons of stores to choose from including an underground city where you can walk from one mall to another.

Parking is a bit more expensive than it used to so if you can find a hotel that has private indoor parking, it would help a lot! St-Laurent, St-Denis & Pins Avenue are nice streets to take a stroll on without the car and they're not too far from downtown.

If you happen to come on a Wednesday or a Saturday, there's usually a fireworks festival display that you can watch at the Old Port (Old Montreal). Thousands of people flock there to watch it. Starts at 10pm, ends at 10:30pm, almost precisely every time!!

Oh & if you need help with directions & you happen to ask someone who speaks only French, don't hesitate to ask someone else. Some people are unfortunately not as friendly as others when they're not spoken to in their own language (I've heard of some narrow-minded people answering stupidities back to poor tourists who don't understand them). I appologize on their behalf if that happens to you, but don't be afraid, we're not all like that!! ;)

well i hope that helps!! have a great trip!! =D
I'm from Mtl & I love it here!! =D Even if it's ridiculously cold in winter, it's still worth it!! =P
I just came back from there. Chaperoned a middle school group of 17 teenagers. Had the best time ever there, we walked all over the city. We went to many museums. Check out the bio dome, botanical gardens, insectorium, the fine art museum has a special Disney exhibit (this was more older kid/adult then what you would think disney would be). We saw cirqu de solie and an imax. Mcgill university has lots to offer, the museum of natural history there was the best.
