What are some budget-friendly areas to live in/near Montreal?

Good location too (near grocery stores, cafes, etc.)

LaSalle has practically no cafes but Verdun does! With cohesive architecture it is getting better and better every day. But so are other areas of Montr茅al formerly thought of as poor like Ville-Emard and St-Henri and along the metro green line from Quartier Latin to Hochelaga and Maisoneuve.

And of course there are the dependable standby neighborhoods running roughly 500 meters on either side of Blvd Jean-Talon.

But the neighborhood that has recently most amazed me is St-Charles; considered one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city but right on the m茅tro and just a few blocks from downtown (across the canal). I was there last Saturday for the first time in a couple of years and was just amazed with the new boutiques and cafes and renovated housing. Not only does it have a supermarket but also several artisan food producers (I was there to track down some great smoked meat and sausages at a place I learned about on Centre Street).

canada is expensive! although there is free healthcare...
Ville LaSalle, Lachine and some parts of the West Island. I am sure there are many more but these are the ones I am most familiar with.
Try the East side of town (East of Boulevard Saint-Laurent), always cheaper than the West side I'm afraid...

I used to live on Sainte-Famille Street (about three streets away West of Saint-Laurent Blvd) and I only paid $300 a month in rent back then but that was fifteen years ago.

It's probably a lot more expensive now I bet!

Good luck to you!
