When I went to Montreal, I always wanted to know why are the freeways 2-laned, instead of 4-laned?

In the USA they're 4-laned.

Sometimes it is because they were built a long time ago when only two lanes were necessary. Then the area beside it got built up with factories, etc. and there was no room to widen the highway. However, many highways through Montreal are more than two lanes so maybe you didn't drive on those ones??
