What kind of searches do they do when you drive into Canada from the US? |
Travel Info Do they search your whole car? Do they search each individual person? Do they have dogs? What kinds of questions do they ask? That kind of thing... Also, what is it like on the way back into the US? Travel Tips They may do all of that if you are one of the vehicles chosen for the spot searches that happen from time to time. But that hardly ever happens. My husband and I have crossed both ways many times and have never been searched at all. Usually they just ask what country are you from, where were you born, who owns the vehicle, are you carrying any weapons or anything else prohibited (some meat products, live animals, etc.), if you are returning from the US to Canada they will ask the value of anything you bought while you were there. If you are a US citizen coming into CAnada they will ask the purpose of your visit, how long you intend to stay, where you are heading. That's about it, really. I'm not sure what they ask a US citizen returning to the US, but I would expect it is about the same - how long were you in CAnada, what did you buy, what was the value of purchases that were not personal use items, etc. Go to the Canadian Customs website for more info about crossing the border. Custom's can be a pain but for the most part they ask where you're from, why you're travelling to Canada / USA and how long you plan to stay. They ask to see your passport or some sort of ID and that's it. Have your proof of citizenship ready and take a copy of your itinerary (Hotel reservations, etc.). If you are bringing gifts for friends or family, you are permitted an unlimited amount of items but they must be valued at less than $60 CAN. You can import 40oz of spirits, 2 Liters of wine, or 24 beer per person as well as 200 cigarettes. Modified 1 year ago |
