Are passports now needed to visit Canada? |
Travel Info I live in NH and want to spend a long weekend in Canada. I keep getting conflicting answers from friends. Travel Tips Currently, as of today, Right now, YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT FOR TRAVEL BETWEEN THE USA AND CANADA. You will need your driver's license and your birth certificate (not a copy). HOWEVER, with that said, starting January 1, 2008 YOU WILL. Here is the information from the USA Government: The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future. This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp... Others No ... the date has been moved back to the turn of 2007. Currently a birth certificate and government ID are suffice. Not currently. Maybe in 2007 If you have kids and travel without one parent, bring a letter from the other giving you permission to cross borders with them. Not often asked, but a nuisance when they want one. You don't need a passport to enter Canada, but starting in December you will need a passport to return to the US. So indirectly, you'll need a passport to get back home. No but they help |
