We are going to travel to Quebec from the US. What are the traffic rules for Montreal and/or the province? |
Travel Info Our daughter is in an exchange program and we are driving from Ohio to pick her up in Montreal. She said that traffic lights are different and some of the laws are different too. I would prefer not getting a traffic ticket for ignorance. Is there a place online where I can find these out? Thanks. Travel Tips I live in Michigan and have driven multiple times to visit my boyfriend in Montreal. From personal experience, on the island itself right hand turns at red lights are illeagal and there are signs posting this as you cross into the city. Some of the lights when they turn green blink immediately and then change to solid green. Oh, and around here all the lights are hanging over the center of the intersection and most all there are on the corner so I tend to nearly miss them from time to time... As likely with any metropolitan area there are a lot of one way streets downtown and in Old Port so be prepared for that and on these streets is parallel parking on either side sometimes. Trucks tend to park in either lane to unload, so keep an eye out! Bikers and pedestrians are crawling all over as well in the spring and summer... Just things I noticed, though I'm not sure they'll be all that helpful ; ) Others The lights are not different. Speed is listed in kilometers, not miles. Signs are mostly in French. Just do not drive like a manic and you will be fine. Wear your seat belt. Enjoy Montreal. It is a great city. The city of Montreal is on an island, no right turns on red lights are allowed here. Parking on city streets can be a nightmare even for residents. You have to look at the signs carefully because on many side streets you need a resident sticker to be allowed to park there. On the main streets of downtown there is metered parking. Speed limit signs are in kilometers per hour, not miles. However many local drivers don't obey the traffic laws, so you need to be careful. Montreal drivers are notorious for being discourteous. Modified 11 months ago |
