Why is there a trail of smoke that behind a airplane that in the air just before he come in for landing? |
Travel Info i alway see a trail of smoke behind a airplane i never knew why Travel Tips Some older, inefficient aircraft tend to leave a bluish brownish trail of exhaust smoke behind them, most of your newer stuff are a lot more fuel efficient and tho they do have exhaust, it does not look as dark. What you also might be seeing is a condensation or vapor trail, if a plane flies thru lots of clouds or a rain storm, or it was raining where the aircraft left from, when they extend flaps and lower the landing gear a lot of trapped water will get exposed to the slipstream of air and as it gets sucked out it turns into vapor, which kind of looks like white smoke. This can also happen if their is a lot of humidity in the air. You can usually see it best along the wings and wing tips. And pay no attention to the misinformed directly above, planes do not dump fuel every time they land, the only time a plane dumps fuel is when their is an emergency, and not all planes have fuel dump capability. Others I think that is the "vapor trail" from changing altitudes to a different temperature... not smoke. I think it farts after completing such a long journey and getting totaly exhausted It's not actually smoke... they are dropping excess fuel, which supposedly evaporates before hitting the ground... great for the ozone, huh?? Most planes always fly with a full tank, for emergencies... but they cannot land unless their fuel is below a certain point Hi, you are asking about this smoke trail behind the plane as it comes in for the landing. As a few has already surmised, this is water vapour trail. However the reasons above are valid for flight at altitude. Whereas the one you are seeing is during landing. This has to do more with the leve of moisture in the air and also the energy imparted to the air when the plane comes in to land. Aircraft land at maximium lift so that it can fly slowest. When this happens, there is a lot of turbulent air or strong vortices or strong energised air created just after the wings, strongest at the wing tips. In the mornings or evenings or rain-possible days, this trail energised the moisture into visible trails and become much more visible. So you will see this 'smoke trail' as the plane comes in to land. |
