Old Town
Mount Royal (St Josephs Oratory)
Yes, Old Montreal has a lot of historical charm, especially Place Jacques Cartier, but for the average tourist, just a walk along Rue Ste-Catherine, between Guy and Phillips Square would be great, since this is where all the shopping centres and pretty girls are. The greatest concentrations of pretty girls will be along Crescent and St-Denis streets, both which can be reached off of Rue Ste-Catherine.

Old Montreal
and hiking on Mount Royal
and strolling down St-Laurent Blvd.
That is Montreal in a nutshell.
depends on your interests:

touristy but very nice: old Montreal

trendy shopping + good food: Saint-Laurent btw Ste-Catherine & Mont-Royal or Saint-Denis btw Ste-Catherine & Mont-Royal

stupidest building ever built: Stade Olympique

market: Marche Jean-Talon or Marche Atwater

religion: Notre-Dame

But if you have time...

Here is a nice itinerary to get the essence of my city:

-Old Montreal (start from the river). Just walk around and enjoy eating outside.

-Chinatown (unless your city has one - ours is nice but fairly small)

-Up to Sainte-Catherine St.

-East on Ste-Catherine until you get to Saint-Denis, which you will take towards the North. Shopping, good food (try l'Express, mmm).

-walk until you arrive to Mont-Royal. You can walk a few blocks east but do not spend too much time - it used to be a cool place but now it's only for the "cool" rich people...

-Still on Mont-Royal, head West until you get to the mountain Mont-Royal. If it's Sunday, you will head the "tam tams" - a lively weekly fiesta.

-Go back East and hit Saint-Laurent (good street to hit from 8pm - for dinner and fun.

-When you are done walking up and down on Saint-Laurent, go to bed.

That is what I would do in one Summer day when I was 20. If you are older, split in 2 days :)
