Is a passport required to travel to Canada? |
Travel Info traveling on Labor day to Montreal and was told by someone that I need a passport to go there??? This is new to me I have never needed one before? Travel Tips If you are travelling from the US, no it is not required yet. You need some id like a drivers license and your birth certificate to prove your citizenship. Starting in January (the 7th I think), people will need a passport to enter the US (US citizens and non-citizens alike), so in effect, you will need a passport to come to Canada as you will need it to re-enter the US when you return home. Enjoy your trip to Montreal! Others Depends where you are traveling from. IN the USA to Canada, No you do not need a passport. YOu must have a valid drivers license or another acceptable from of ID like a birth certificate with a seal. From where? The US? There is some discussion on that topic, but I don't think it it's in force yet, and probably won't be for a while. If in doubt, contact the Canadian embassy nearest you (assuming that you are in the USA) for details. They'll know the current guidelines. I never needed one but that was before 9/11. It's quite possible that you do now. Yes it is. you should also take your social security card and a copy of your birth certificate, just to be on the safe side. You Need something to prove you are a US citizen to get back in. If your from Quebec, yes you need a passport to visit canada. Birth certificate and drivers license are still okay to cross US-Canada and back. You might want to think about getting your passport someday soon. There is a LOT of talk about making passports a requirement. It might even be already a done deal and won't go into effect for another year yet. But for this trip, you'll be fine. |
