Is St catherines street in montreal still haven for streetwalkers? |
Travel Info Is St catherines street in montreal still haven for streetwalkers? Travel Tips St-Catherine's Street was never "a haven" for streetwalkers. Prostitution happens to be legal in Canada, although pimping and/or use of other 3rd party "agents" or facillitators is not. Street hookering was/is a misdemeanor in Quebec because of its interfering with vehicular and sidewalk traffic. However, in their ultimate wisdom (?) the police and city fathers decided a few decades ago it would be overlooked and tolerated on just 2 blocks of St-Catherine's Street in the more gamier section of the city's entertainment area not too far from the Palais de Congress exhibition and convention hall. The area is slowly being redeveloped and upgraded, with the performing arts centre just a couple of blocks away. The last time I was there (parked my car for a symphonic concert and then a meal in Chinatown) I saw no street solicitation but that was a Tuesday. I've read that street soliciting has moved into the Hochelaga neighborhood a couple of miles away. But who needs street hooking when there are the public and legal partner-swapping and other sex activity clubs as now exist (OKed by a Canadian Supreme Court decision a couple of years ago)? Others Looking for a date? yes! yeah but its come to be known as the gay district...... |
