What's with the light in downtown Montreal?

Travel Info
I recently visited the downtown Montreal, Canada and am wondering what is the purpose of the nightlight (emitting in cirlces)?

Travel Tips
It's a rotating light on a beacon on top of the building Place Ville-Marie.

"In addition to being the only cruciform building in the core of the city, Place Ville-Marie stands out even more at night because of the rotating beacon on its roof. Its four spotlights are visible at more than 50 kilometres. The building's penthouse contains the Altitude 737 restaurant and night-club (named for its elevation in feet from sea level) and opens onto a rooftop terrace."

Other Travel Tips
That's the alien spaceship where all Canadians get anally probed.
The spinning beam is Place Ville-Marie 1

This is the second tallest building in Montreal
(After Tour SITQ - 1000 de la Gauchetiere)

It is about 636 feet high and a warning to aircraft that may hit the building, a main light in the Montreal skyline. It is also used as a decoration and the major landmark for modern buildings.
Visits to Montreal by me.
This light used to be on top of of the Royal Bank building in Old Montreal. It is the same light you would see at an airport.
When the Place Ville Marie building was build in the 1960's, the bank became the major tennant of it and took the light with them when they moved in.
