Rental Help, do you know what exactly a 2 1/2 apartment is?

Travel Info
I was looking at renting a place in Montreal and have no clue what the difference between a 2 1/2, 3 1/2 and a 4 1/2 is!! Help greatly appreciatted!

Travel Tips
In Montreal, the number system refers to the TOTAL numbers of rooms inside the apartment, including the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, etc. The "half" refers to the bathroom.

So, a 2 1/2 could either be a studio apartment with a separate kitchen, or it could be a one bedroom apartment with a small kitchen that is not separated from the living room by any walls.

A 3 1/2 would likely be a one-bedroom. A 4 1/2 would be a two bedroom, etc. Sometimes landlords will try ti exaggerate the size of the apartment....for instance, they may call it a 4 1/2 when it only has one bedroom if the living room is really big.

Others
2 1/2 bathrooms 3 1/2 bathrooms and 4 1/2 bathrooms
A 2 1/2 has a separate bedroom and a bathroom, and the rest of it (living room, kitchen) all one room.

A 3 1/2 usually has a separate bedroom and a bathroom, and some kind of distinction between the kitchen and the living/dining room, although they may not be quite separate.

A 4 1/2 is usually like a 3 1/2 but with two bedrooms.

The 1/2 refers to the bathroom as far as I know.
I've rented a fair number of apartments in Montreal.
