Weekend in Montreal? |
Travel Info My fiancee and I are getting married at city hall in May and having a bigger ceremony with our families next year (that is when we'll take our honeymoon). But, we'd like to have a weekend trip after we get married and have settled on Montreal (I've always wanted to go to Europe and since I can't, my fiancee tells me that this is the next best thing). I'm really interested in Old Montreal. Can you tell me what we should see in a weekend? Travel Tips Sorry. Old Montreal, though interesting and a bit of fun, is much of a tourist trap. And only about one third of it is actually really old - as in buildings that were originally constructed 200 - 300 years ago. The rest of it (mostly its west side) was mostly built in the early 1900s and was then the financial centre (but taken as that the period architecture - like similar buildings still standing in Chicago and Wall Street New York - is interesting) and so though Old Montreal is overpromoted it is still worth a few hours' roaming, and the Old Port riverfront is right next to it. For the most European-like experience you should find a European-like hotel in a converted greystone in the more French-speaking - but still bi-lingual -area (called the Latin Quarter) and roam around there and into the nearby Sherbrooke-St. Laurent-Berri-Duluth-Mt. Royal-Plateau areas (I assume you have a map so you can check out the area I refer to). Source(s): I am a Montrealer. Other Travel Tips Climb Mount Royal for the view, and some great pictures. There's this fairly unique snack that they sell on the street in the old town. I don't know what they call it, but it is boiled maple syrup that they pour over shaved ice, and it makes a taffylike treat on a stick. So Yummy.
