Does anyone recommend any cheap riad for a family in Marrakesh? |
Travel Info Any recoomendations for cheap family accomodation, or tips for a stay in morroco? Do they sell alcohol freely? Thank you Travel Tips Try looking at Expedia. We booked through them for Marrakech a couple of years ago and found a gorgeous little one called Riad Dar Mimouna - it was down a maze of little alleyways and not too far from the airport. It's in the Medina (The Old Town) which is the 'real' Marrakech and quite crazy. Our room was lovely and they had a nice cafe on the terrace and a dining room on the bottom floor. It had bags of character. I don't know what it is like for children but the whole trip for two adults including flights was about 拢500 in total. Wherever you go, you really can't go too wrong. Just do a little bit of research before you go. Alcohol was ok in the bigger restaurants. When you go there it is definately worth a trip into the Souks, don't just go into the ones around the Jma Al Fna square, find a guide who will take you right inside where the more interesting stuff will be found. You HAVE to haggle, they start off at ridiculous prices and often start at double the reasonable price. They will write down their price on a peice of paper and then you write yours, and then they go down a bit more and it often goes on like that for a while! Take some branded pens to barter with a little more - I had an Audi one with me and it got even more off the price! I did have a very poorly tummy whilst out there and spent 2 days in bed, so be careful with some of the food and tap water. My husband ate the same as me and was ok. I would highly recommend a day trip to the Atlas mountains. They are absolutely stunning - but be prepared for some hiking! Wear trousers or shorts and good trainers. They told us there would be some walking but we were climbing! One woman wore a skirt and had to go back...... It's a great destination to go to, be aware of the traffic and pick pockets though....... the roads are to be seen to be believed and although we were ok, a friend of mine went last year and had his camera stolen. When he reported it to the police he had to pay them to get a report for his insurance.... But don't let that put you off, just be aware of your valuables at all times in the busy areas. And ignore the answer above......... I've felt less safe in the UK at times than I did over there, narrow minded people like that spoil it for others! Others I go to Marrakesh for business. I always stay at the Hotel El Andalous tel. 024 44 82 26 (you will need the phone code in front). It is a four star but very reasonably priced. It's in the Hivernage district (posh!). Lovely pool - great for kids. They have a website - just type the hotel name into the browser and it will come up. Taxi's are dirt cheap. You will NOT find alcohol freely available in cafes etc - they are a muslim country and do not drink. However, you can drink in hotels with no problem. I absolutely love Marrakesh - it is the best place I have every been - it's madness. Make sure you look before you cross the road - you will see what I mean when you get there! Morocco is a terrorist country...I would think twice if I were you. Riads are definitely a good way to be totally immersed in the culture. www.riadsmorocco.com offers different options and it displays the rates (which I'm sure are negotiable). Alcohol is freely available in hotels, bars, clubs and liquor stores. Have fun!!!! Born and raised in Marrakesh |
