And can i rent a car from anywhere out there. is there like a alamo out there? i do not need hotel accomodations i just need to buy a very cheap airline ticket! Any suggestions would be great! Travel Tips Unfortunately, if you're flying from Chicago to Morocco, you cannot go directly. The only direct flights from North America to Morocco leave from New York and Montreal (Canada). If you want to fly directly from the US to Morocco, Royal Air Maroc's New York - Casablanca flight is your best bet (check their website) - then the train takes only 1:45 from the Casablanca (CMN) airport to Rabat. If you don't mind a stopover in Europe, it's probably cheapest to fly to either Madrid, Amsterdam, Paris, or London from Chicago, then get another inexpensive flight to Casablanca or Rabat. Check Travelocity.com to get an idea of costs. A friend of mine just got the best deal going TO Chicago from Casablanca by flying Casa - Madrid, then Madrid to Chicago. Keep in mind that even though Rabat is the capital, Casablanca has the largest airport, and by searching for flights to there, you'll have better luck. As for money, expect to spend a minimum of 200dh/day (that's about $20). Hotels cost anywhere from 100dh/night to 1,000dh/night (a decent one starts around 300dh/night), you can eat three meals a day for less than 100dh, and transportation is inexpensive (the train website is www.oncf.ma). You can rent a car, but you should know that driving conditions are not at all the same as in the US, and rental agencies only rent manual transmissions. Morocco has Avis, Budget and Alamo - check their websites, as it is possible to rent online. You can rent from major agencies in Rabat, Fez, Marrakech and Casablanca. There are also independent Moroccan-owned agencies, but ask at your hotel for a reliable one. Others i recommend Norhtwest airlines. KLM.. http://www.nwa.com/ or http://www.klm.com/ Only one airline flies into the Sal茅/Rabat airport and that is AirFrance. You can get good deals using Travelocity or Orbitz, or have a travel agent look for you. But, your flight will most likely to go the Casablanca airport and you will need to get to Rabat by train or taxi. How much you need to spend while you are here depends on a lot of things like: where you are staying (with friends or family or in a hotel), where you will eat, how you will travel, where you plan to go, what you plan to do, etc... There are many factors involved in deciding how much money to bring. There are car rental places here, off the top of my head I know of Avis and Hertz in the larger areas and Europcar, Thrifty and First-Car is many others. Charges for rental can begin at about $30 per day. I live near Rabat so feel free to email me directly if you have any other questions. There is a link on my profile. If you have the extra $25, there is a great travel guide for Morocco available at Border's by Eyewitness Travel Guides. It has a lot of color pictures and descriptions of all of the larger cities, many of the larger villages and discusses culture, customs, money, etc... I live here and refer to it quite often. American in Morocco Terry has some good answers, for Rabat only Air France lands, however you need to know not just Air France has access to Morocco. You may fly with Royal Air Maroc as well. Land in Casablanca then you're 40 minutes away from Rabat by train, or as you said you do not need hotel accomodation I assume you visiting someone, they can pick you up there. Rabat is not far from MohammedV International Airport, especially with the new highways. I suggest you go on Orbitz.com or one of the online travel agency and look up for the trip deals. You will certainly go to through NewYork fo ra direct flight to Morocco from the US. But it's not your only choice: You might find a good deal from Chicago to a city in Europe then relay from there to Rabat or Casablanca. When I go from Boston, my cheapest ticket is on Orbitz, via NY then Morocco with the RAM. I could also go from the US directly to Europe and find many more competitive prices with the budget flights. Bare in mind, you will be coming to Morocco in a high touristic season, the airlines jack up their prices. However the bulk of your budget will be for your ticket. Once you are there, without worrying about a hotel, it will be accessible financially to you. I am not sure what kind of budget you have, either a student or employee, but for 3 weeks including entertainment and a little tourism here and there, a little shopping, you could get away with $600-700, considering the current exchange rate is at about 8-9 MAD (dirhams) to 1$ (Note it might go up in the summer). Remember you don't need so much money if you do not plan on going out too often or travelling to other places where a hotel might be the option. Also, in case you are short of money on location, ATMs are abundant in big cities like Rabat and Casablanca, for as long as you have a MasterCard or Visa card. I suggest you bring American Express Traveller's Checks rather than hard currency (unless you know of someone who can give you a good deal under the table, but I advice against it). Renting a car will not be a problem in morocco. As Terry said the daily rate for a car is about that much. When it comes to driver's licence for a foreigner I drive with both my licenses on me at all time. But last I heard from friends and family the US one is just fine out there. For 15 days renting a car @ $40 a day average, consider spending 600 bucks then you have to worry about gaz which is sold by the liter and not gallon (close to 4 lr to 1 gallon) and might reflect an arm and a leg for anyone not used to such prices. All and all, your budget including air flight, casual light entertainment aka a club here and there, a little shopping, a car and some tourism, might be $2300-2500, much lower if you do not need the car daily nor go out much. Well, I hope this bit of info can help and complement what Terry offered. In any case, please use your common sense and apply all rules of a tourist visiting a moderately muslim country (clothing, behavior etc etc). Also keep your belonging very close to you, and that doesn't apply just to tourists, and simply always be alert to what's up around you. Morocco is a beautiful country with beautiful people and traditions and customs, you will enjoy your stay anytime you visit. Native k |
