Anyone been to Fes in Morocco? |
Travel Info 1. Can anyone send me a copy of a street map online and 2. Can anyone tell me the easiest and faster (cost no option) way to get to my hotel from the airport (I will have a young child with me) Thank you Travel Tips Fes is mental! 1) Get the lonely planet guide for Morocco, I found it excellent although a few things were a tiny bit more expensive than advertised in it (inflation I guess) 2) As is said above a petit taxi is probably best, your hotel will tell you where to get one or will call one for you. They can be found at the entrance to the medina anyway, the other locations are marked in the lonely planet map. But first ask in your hotel how much the taxi should cost then negogiate the fare with the taxi driver before you leave. Although thinking about it, in Fez the taxi drivers tended to use the meter so when you negogiate he may just point at the meter. (The meter moves a bit like the seconds on a digital watch though!) Fez is a crazy amazing place, beware of tourist "guides" though, they won't leave you alone and next thing you know you've bought a rug! I got a bit ripped off by one.. although I did get a free lecture on the benefits of Islam and the corruptness of the wealthier countries (incl. the rich muslim ones) though.... ! It was all fun though, I was travelling alone and he was good company, to be fair. Its a nice rug too. I agree with the man above a stroll in the medina is a serious adventure. Also, I'm not sure I'd recommend visiting the tannery unless you have a very effective means of blocking your sense of smell - I have never experienced a smell like it. Others 1. Can't, I don't have a scanner. The best street map is in the Lonely Planet though, if you can get a copy. Otherwise, you can buy a book called "Fes: From Bab to Bab" (often only in its French edition) in Fes itself, which has great street maps and historical information. 2. That depends on where your hotel is, my friend. Many of the nicer hotels and riads offer airport pickup. If yours doesn't that the fastest and easiest way is to take a petit taxi - make sure the driver turns his meter on, but it will still be relatively expensive - the petit taxi seats 3 maximum and can usually hold all of your luggage. Have lived in Morocco for awhile I don't personally have a map to give you. BUT! I do have some strong advice. Do NOT accept directions from people within Fes, they seem to like getting you lost and then charging more money to get you out. After you pay attention to that advice let me tell you this: I have to say that one of the best adventures in life is exploring Fes without a map. 'Nuff said.
