Old name for Marrakesh? |
Travel Info What's the old name for Marrakesh? It's really bugging me, it's on the tip of my tongue. Travel Tips There isn't one. Marrakesh, from which the English word (as well as the German, French, Dutch, etc) "Morocco" is derived, has been the city's name since it was founded. Others You must be thinking of another city. Yusuf ibn Tashfin, member of the Almoravides dynasty, founded Marrakesh in 1062. What came to my mind was Istanbul/Constantinople. Fez el Bali is the oldest city in Morroco and Marakesh known as the "Red City or Al Hamra," is a city in southwestern Morocco in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. There isn't an old name. That is it..Marrakesh known to us as Morocco and founded in the 11th century I think?. It's founder was someone called "Yusuf Tashfin" and I have never known it to have any other name. Free Spirit |
