In general, is it a custom in Morocco practice polygamy? |
Travel Info In general, is it a custom in Morocco practice polygamy? Travel Tips The majority of people do not practice polygamy here in Morocco anymore. In the recent past more people did practice polygamy than now. It is more likely to find a man with multiple wives in smaller villages or the country side. I live here and I only know 1 person who currently has more than one wife. I do know of people who did have more than one wife but they are no longer living and this was 2 generations ago. It is only legally allowed here if the wife approves of it (though in the villages that can be circumvented). Islamically the man does not have to get approval from the other wife/wives. Others Traditionally, yes. Islamically, yes. Today, not so much. Although it is legal, the Moudawana (Family Law) passed by the new king requires that a man get his wife's written consent before taking on a new wife. In the past 50 years, polygamy has become less and less common, and the new law was not met with much protest. I know of a few couples here in Morocco who do practice polygamy, but no, it is not common at all. Men now need permission from their first wife to marry again and most women will not tolerate that. Men also need to prove that they can support both women equally in every way and that is nearly impossible. I would only like to add, if a man truly knows how to use the internet in Africa and can keep one on 24/7 residentially, he can support all the wives he wants. Including putting each in their own compound while none of them will need a formal job or small turn-key business. The husband as well will not need a formal job or turn-key business with employees. The only problem is rural or agriculturally-based men in Africa with many wives are not thinking in terms of global economics yet ,only locally or regionally. I will soon write a book to teach them how to become ranked among the top 1,000 richest people in the world ...no problem. |
