Traveling to Morocco: Women Dress Code?

Travel Info
Hi, I will be studying abroad in Morocco for 6 weeks. I'm 21, female, American.

Any suggestions on what to wear from day-to-day in the streets and on the beach? I don't want to look suggestive. thanks :).

Travel Tips
Well, you're lucky to be going to Rabat, anyhow. It's one of the most liberal cities in the country. I assume you're studying with CCCL? Anyhow, if so, it's pretty relaxed. In Rabat, women can wear conservative tank tops (shells, for example), and skirts or pants should go to the knee at least. On the beach, you can wear a bikini, no problem. Keep in mind that Moroccan women tend to dress kind of "smart" - casual American style can look funny. Most women your age wear heels, for example. You may also be interested in the fact that Rabat has nightclubs - there, dress as you would back home, basically.

As for travel - you should definitely bring one or two more conservative outfits if you plan to travel to the countryside or certain other cities. Mid-length sleeves and long pants or skirts should do in that case. No need to cover your head. Wouldn't hurt to bring a pair of sneakers, either.

it is depend where u go if u r going the city area then u can where what u want and if u r going village side then wear complete covered dress and on the minimum to peace :) please on tourist beach where u find local people then i think its better u wear short or t-shirt or smilier blow like that and if u r visited islmaic places like mosq then u have to cover your complete body from leg to showlder and put scraf when u r entering.

i travel 2 times morraco and i give u all detail what i know normally city people r birght minded and u can do what u want there
first of all rabat is not the most liberal city in morocco. why because thats were the king lives. which means there a lot of police every where, it is a bit religious because it has to be its the islamic capitol of morocco. Marrakech and casablanca by far is the most liberal. also rabat is super boring. not much to do there. you can wear what ever you want in th main cities. in villages you should cover more. it religious site you need to be covered from head to toe. now sometimes they dont let you in side mosques, what you do then is ask them to show you how to wash the islamic way then they can't refuse you entry because you cleansed your self. don't wear see through clothes, micro minis. no excesive clevage showing. you will probably hear from the women about more then the men. cause they think you hit on there men hehe. at beach casablanca, rabat, agadir you can wear swimsuit no thongs or over the top swimwear.now you should diffenatly go to marrakech. i live in usa and i just bought a house there to rent out and stay in when i go there. hope this help. i will be in morocco from jul 3 to the 18th 2007. have fun
Hi, i know this has nothing to do with your question but i just want to make you aware to be on the look out for a missing 4 year old British girl abducted from Portugal 3 weeks ago. Her name is Madeleine and was last sighted in Morocco. Please visit www.findmadeleine.com Thanks for your time, hope you have a great 6 weeks. x
well Morocco is opener than you can imagine, but why not to take caution and bring conservative clothes.
Morocco is a nice place to go to, you will enjoy I'm sure specially of you go to the south.
I guess you are going to the CCCL in Rabat, I'm actually in Rabat, email me if you need any help. foxylady090@gmail.com
good luck.
I live very near Rabat and it is an open place, but modesty is still very important. People who dress in ways that flaunt their bodies will get unwanted attention from both men and women because it is not acceptable. Short sleeves are fine, but showing your legs and cleavage is generally not. There are many clothes you can buy there that will cover you and help you stay cool. As for the beach, I am not sure it will be open this summer because of a major revitalization program they are doing near the Bourgreg River. I know the beach in Sale is open but it is very dirty from all of the construction. If you take a swimsuit, keep is conservative, not revealing too much, and expect to get looks from people there. Many local women go to the beach there fully covered. They are used to tourists though and will recognize you as not being native.

Don't worry too much and be yourself. Moroccans are used to tourists and have seen it all. Use common sense in things you do and in how you dress. If you think that something may attract unwanted attention, then it will. You will see many people, especially young girls, dressing any way that they like, but if you want less attention and more respect, dress logically. I am sure you will be fine. Enjoy the sites and the culture and have fun there!
