What is the standard of the National roads in Morrocco? |
Travel Info Specifically the roads from Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Marrahech to Essaouira? It's been 14 years since I've been and am trying to plan a trip... Thanks. Travel Tips The roads themselves are quite good, the problem is the drivers! Both roads you refer to are popular routes and quite good. Others Um - I only know the roads around Agadir and the Atlas mountains. They are a bit hit and miss. A lot of the major roads have been rebuilt recently and are as good as here (driving isn't, but at least the roads are flat). However, the minute you go off the major roads they are very rough and ready and uneven. I suggest you would need a 4x4 if you are going to be adventurous, but if you are going from city to city you are probably ok in a normal car if you drive slowly and aren't going when it's wet I drove down there about 6 years ago and the roads were fine. We ended up in M'hamid, right on the edge of the Sahara, where the Algerian border is meant to be - and where the road ends. We didn't have any problems with the roads. We came back along the coast on the Essaouira - Casablanca roads. Again, no problems, but a bit more traffic and lorries there. I would say the standard is fairly good, like an A road anywhere else. Watch out for overtaking trucks though - they will run you down if you're in their way (ie, get over!) I think if you can you should sneak a look at (or buy) the Rough Guide to Morocco, they strongly advise against driving but it may provide some useful information. Our driver in Morocco actually said that the road from Marrakesh to Essaouira is very dangerous and very over-used. I don't know about Marrakech to Ourazazate. Good luck and hope you have a good trp. I travelled from Marrakesh to Ouarzazate by bus last August and the roads were decent and pretty empty as far as I remember. But considering you will be going up the Atlas mountains they get very steep and windey. dear friend The road to to Essaouira is easy you can stop in the halfway to take pictures of the goats claiming The Argane trees, the trees you can found them only there and you can stop at the women cooperative producing The argane oil and different products from that oil. and The town of Essaouira is fun to walk it full of art gallery and you can meet the last of the hi pis "the children of the Flowers". to eat you have to go the main square which is next the fishing port and to eat fish, Crabs, lobsters, with a good prices, the fish restaurants are outside small and one next to the other, they are pained in blue and white. About Ouarzazate the road from Marrakesh is difficult snaklly up to 2672m above the sea but is Worth it you can see a different architecture Berber villages the Atlas has different colors sometimes you are on the moon. if you stay there for 2 days is nice. you can visit the Studios of WARNER BROS AND UNIVERSAL the scenes of the movie of Cleopatra with Lise Taylor Cleopatra. |
