Is the Moroccan king the Caliph of all Muslims-not just those in Morocco? |
Travel Info I'm really just asking this to see what you have to say. I read in a forum a while back ppl saying he was as Morocco was never part of the Ottoman Empire and all....unfortunately, I don't remember which forum this was in...nor am I able to find it! :'( I'd like to hear all thoughts as I am pretty much a blank slate on this issue.....have fun! Travel Tips No, the king of morocco used to be called "sultan" and not "khalifa", and he has been called "king" since the french protectorate. And he is not only the sultan or king for the Muslims, but also for Moroccan jews, and this is what allowed Mohammed V to protect moroccan jews during the french protectorate form wearing the yellow star or beeing deported (France was at the time under German occupation), because the protectorate status said that he was still in charge of cultural and religious affairs of his people. However, he has got also a status of "Ameer Al Moomeneen" which litterally means "prince of the believers"...this gives him a position of spiritual guide concerning islamic affairs...meaning that he is the one that gives the global direction of which kind of islam should be practiced in Morocco..and thanks to this function of the king, Moroccan muslims are following the "Malekite Madhab" which, at the opposite of the "wahabite Madhab" (like in Saudi Arabia), is very open to live with its time, and evolute....and this is why extreemist islamist activists in Morocco are contesting the king and do not want him to represent them anymore, because they do not agree with the "open-mindedness" of the islam he is -and his predecessors have always have been- representing in morocco. and it is true that Morocco has never been part of the ottoman empire, in fact, Morocco was an empire extending from the atlantic ocean, to a part of Lybia, and was called "Moorrakoush" at the time , in reference to Marrakesh that was its capital. All these lands were progressively lost to the Ottoman empire, confining Morocco to its actual borders (well...part of what wasn't lost to the ottomans is now in Algeria thanks to the French who did not respect the eastern borders exactly as they found them when they arrived!! and also, algeria has been trying for 30 yrs to take control over the occidental sahara from morocco by supporting a separatist group in it, because they need a window on the atlantic ocean, even if the international court of Lahaye confirmed its belonging to Morocco. Hopefully this problem will be solved this summer as negociations for an autonomy are ongoing in Manhasset ). So the answer is No, the moroccan king is not the Caliph for all muslims, but only for those in Morocco. Others moroccans believe it not others I would hope not :) Igi is crazy. That is strange comment about the last caliph escaping to Morocco. Who said the caliphate ran down a certain bloodline? It doesn't. And imagine Hassan II, yikes! Morocco has a king?! :D I didn't know... so he's not :D As you might know, the last caliph fled the middle east and found refuge in fez, and since the king is one of his descendant, technically "yes" he is the caliph of all Muslims. BUT back in the caliphs times they were no boundaries the whole Islamic world was under the caliph's reign, unlike now things have changed and borders were created and different flags were raised. Certainly not. |
