Is Morocco a nice country?

Travel Info
I'm a 19 year old female. Would it be safe for me to travel to Morocco with a friend (also a female, age 25) or even alone?

Please speak from personal experience only.

Travel Tips
Just got back from Morcco.

First to answer your question. Morocco is a beautiful country with tons of history (check link below). The contrast from new to old world Morocco can be seen by traveling throughout the country.

In the smaller towns you will find all women dressed in the traditional jalaba and headscarf (some in the south with just their eyes showing) whereas in other parts of the country such as Rabat (the capital) and Casablanca (the main hub of trade and import/export) you will find women in jeans and shirts (though still modestly dressed).

In Marrakech you will find the 'old' Morocco. A bus ride over the mountains takes you to Agadir (site of the horrific 1960 earthquake that leveled the whole city) where you will find a much newer Morocco.

Some advice:
1. if you are traveling with a friend stay together. It is very common to see females with females and males with males.
2. it may be a good practice to get a headscarf and wear that. It will make you fit in much better and garner a lot less attention.
3. NO cleavage. You will have a city of men on you in a heartbeat.
4. If you are harrassed wave your hand and say 'shooma' which translates to 'shame on you'. You should NEVER be touched in any way (even on the hands) by a man nor should you do the same.

I wore sunglasses much of the time and wore a beard and got a suntan. With my Irish blue eyes, I stood out like a sore thumb.

As the 'ole saying goes "When in Rome... do as the Romans do"... that applies 100% to Morocco.

Respect their customs and way of life and you will be fine. Moroccans are some of the (if not the most) hostpitable people in the world.

EDIT: from the last post above mine. NEVER hold your head high. Never make eye contact with a male. If you do drop your head like you are ashamed. You will even find in some shops women wait on women and men on men. The town where I stayed... the cafe's were only for men... no women allowed... not a law, just common knowledge and acceptance. Other Travel Tips
I think it is. But it is packed with tourrists. I mean but yes it is. BEAUTIFUL! So you should.
Yes, it is. However, have you ever been to a third world country? If not, you might be in for a surprise. I suggest reading a few good guidebooks before going. Something for the higher end traveler and something a backpacker might take that way you get a good overview.
been there done that, married to a Moroccan
Yes it is a nice country. The people are extremely friendly and generous. In my opinion you are perfectly safe here alone or with a friend. Two young women are likely to get some attention (possibly unwanted) from men but keep your head high and make it clear it is not acceptable (unless u don't mind it lol).
Have fun!
Living in Morocco. I move about on my own all the time.
