Can you recommend places to stay in Marrakech and Atlas Mountains in October 2007?

I want to stay in a quiet, cheap, typically-Moroccan hotel/riad, with character, within walking distance of main square next October. I'm also looking for suggestions for a place in the mountains, accessible from Marrakech, for a 2/3-night stay, ideally somewhere I can hire a guide to walk in mountains.

Tips re what to do and see would be welcome, especially in the mountains, as would guidance re transport (hire car?). We will be two middle-aged women staying a week in total.
