Who changed the name from Bombay airport to Mumbai airport? |
Travel Info Who changed the name from Bombay airport to Mumbai airport? Travel Tips i don't know but British airways still use the code BOM, and most people i met refer to it as Bombay. I hear the government are thinking about changing the name Bangaloor. It smells to me as change for the sake of change. If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it Others The original name was Mumbai, which was corrupted to Bom Bahia by the Portuguese and further corrupted to Bombay by the British. The change was made to fix what was actually broken by them and not the other way round. The Brits haven't got it yet - that the sun has set on their empire! The local state government restored the original name Mumbai in 1995. Cities and streets have been systematically restored to their original spellings and pronunciations since the British had to quit India. The metro cities were spared for a long time, as that would have an international effect. The city name was changed from Bombay to Mumbai about 6 or 7 years ago. Therefore the airport name got changed Bombay is the British name given to the city. Mumbai is the correct Indian name. I'm not sure when or if there was an official name change from Bombay to Mumbai. |
