How does an American rent an apartment in Germany?

Travel Info
I am from the U.S. living in germany with my military dad. I need to find out how to move out on my own. I have no clue where to start. I need help.

Travel Tips
Do you have a job? Will you be able to afford the rent and utilities? If so, you have a choice. You can look in the local German paper under "Immobilien", you can look in the local American newspaper/Stars and Stripes, or you can go to a property manager/realtor (who will charge you for finding the apt).

You will need at least 3 months rent to move in. That's the first month's rent, deposit, and turning on the utilities.
